Growing, protecting, and improving the quality of the jobs base in Oakland will be a critical piece of my platform as Mayor. We will get this done with several key steps. First, we must protect and equitably invest in small Oakland businesses – through incentive programs, tax breaks, and safety/security measures. Second, we must work to retain larger employers. We need to understand what keeps them here in Oakland (and what makes them leave), we have to listen, and we have to address their concerns. Third, our public contracts should benefit the public good – with labor standards and local hire provisions that require living wage jobs for Oaklanders. Finally, we need to invest deeply in workforce development partnerships, so that all Oaklanders have the training and experience required to get and keep family sustaining jobs in the new Oakland economy.
